Beschreibung
An 1835 watercolour by David Cox depicting five horses at a watering hole. This work features the loose brushwork and atmospheric light characteristic of the English Watercolour School.
David Cox was a leading figure of the Birmingham School and a prominent member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours. This 1835 painting demonstrates his mature style, characterised by a loose and expressive handling of the medium. Cox often preferred rough paper, which allowed his brushstrokes to skip across the surface, creating a sense of movement and atmospheric light.
The composition features a group of five horses gathered at the edge of a pool. Their forms are rendered with economical strokes, while their individual postures are clearly defined. To the left, a dense mass of trees provides a dark tonal contrast to the expansive, pale sky. The horizon is low, which emphasises the scale of the sky and the openness of the rural setting.
Cox was known for his ability to capture the effects of British weather. In this work, the sky is rendered with broad washes of blue and grey, suggesting a breezy day with shifting light. The palette is restrained, relying on earthy ochres and cool blues to convey a naturalistic scene. This approach was a departure from the more detailed and topographical watercolours of the previous generation, moving instead towards a more subjective representation of the countryside.
His technique involved building up layers of wash while maintaining the transparency of the paint. The horses themselves show a variety of coats, from a pale grey to a dark bay, each reflecting the light differently. The water in the foreground acts as a mirror, doubling the visual interest of the animals and grounding them in the environment. This specific work was produced during a period when Cox was increasingly interested in the fleeting qualities of nature, often sketching outdoors to record immediate impressions before finishing the works in his studio. His work affected later landscape painters who sought to capture the essence of a scene rather than every minute detail.
