A bronze portrait of Horace Brodzky by Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, created in 1913 during the height of the Vorticist movement.
Henri Gaudier-Brzeska produced this bronze portrait of his friend, the artist Horace Brodzky, in 1913. The work captures the physical presence of the subject through a series of planes and surfaces that reflect the artist's engagement with the Vorticist movement. Gaudier-Brzeska, a French sculptor who spent his brief career in London, sought to strip away unnecessary detail to reveal the structural essence of his sitters.
In this bronze, the surface texture is active and tactile. The artist uses the material to suggest the muscularity and posture of Brodzky, rather than attempting a smooth, academic likeness. The head is tilted, and the features are rendered with a directness that characterises much of Gaudier-Brzeska's output from this period. The bronze reflects the influence of non-Western sculpture, which the artist studied extensively at the British Museum, alongside the modern energy of early twentieth-century London.
This piece is a study of form and character. It demonstrates the artist's ability to balance abstraction with the recognisable traits of his subject. The bronze casting preserves the marks of the original modelling process, allowing the viewer to see the hand of the artist in the finished object. Gaudier-Brzeska's work remains a primary example of the experimental spirit that defined the Vorticist circle before the outbreak of the First World War. The sculpture is a physical record of the creative environment shared by Gaudier-Brzeska, Brodzky, and Sophie Brzeska, whose presence in the studio was central to the artist's daily life and practice. This print captures the bronze in a museum setting, showing the interplay of light across its metallic surface.
