Beschreibung
A classic woodblock print from Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, capturing an elevated view of Edo from the Honganji temple roof.
This woodblock print is a plate from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a collection that established Hokusai as a master of the genre. The composition provides an elevated perspective from the roof of the Honganji temple in Asakusa, looking out over the city of Edo toward Mount Fuji.
The foreground is dominated by the temple roof, where workers are depicted engaged in repairs. Their presence provides a sense of scale and human activity against the vastness of the horizon. A kite, tethered to an unseen person, floats in the mid-ground, drawing the eye across the space toward the distant, snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji. The use of Prussian blue, a relatively new pigment in Japan at the time, defines the sky and the distant horizon, creating a clear separation between the atmospheric distance and the architectural details of the temple.
Hokusai employs a sophisticated use of line and colour to balance the geometric forms of the temple roof with the organic, soft shapes of the clouds and the mountain. The scaffolding on the left adds a vertical element that contrasts with the horizontal sweep of the city rooftops below. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to combine precise observation of daily life with the grand scale of natural features. The work remains a primary example of the technical skill involved in Edo-period printmaking, where multiple woodblocks were carved and printed to achieve the subtle gradients in the sky and the crisp outlines of the architecture. It captures a specific moment in the urban life of Edo, framed by the constant presence of the mountain.
