Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure in the Neo-Impressionist circle, frequently visited the Normandy coast to capture the shifting conditions of the English Channel. In this depiction of Honfleur, the artist focuses on the harbour entrance, defined by its lighthouse and stone jetty. The composition balances the solid, architectural forms of the pier against the fluid, restless motion of the sea.
Luce employs a technique that reflects his earlier engagement with Pointillism, though here the brushwork is more fluid and painterly.
