A geometric screenprint by Swiss artist Max Bill, featuring a precise arrangement of primary colours and black forms within a diamond composition.
Max Bill, a central figure in the development of Concrete Art, created this work as a formal response to the visual language of Pablo Picasso. The composition relies on the mathematical precision that defined Bill's career, moving away from subjective expression toward objective, logical structures. The image is oriented as a diamond, or lozenge, which creates a dynamic tension against the square frame of the paper.
At the centre, a square is divided into four triangles of yellow, red, green, and blue. This core is surrounded by a larger black square, which is further framed by bands of colour. The arrangement of these geometric elements follows a strict internal logic, where colour and shape are treated as autonomous entities. Bill avoids any reference to the natural world, focusing instead on the relationships between the geometric components and the surrounding white space.
This print reflects the principles of the Ulm School of Design, where Bill served as the first rector. The work demonstrates his belief that art should be based on mathematical thinking rather than emotional intuition. By using a limited, high-chroma palette, Bill achieves a balance between the weight of the black forms and the luminosity of the primary colours. The result is a study in spatial organisation, where the viewer is invited to observe the interaction of shapes without the distraction of narrative or representational content. It is a clear example of the artist's pursuit of clarity and order in visual communication.
