A dynamic abstract composition featuring heavy, gestural brushwork and a high-contrast palette of deep blues, ochres, and reds.
This work, titled Hommage à Miguel de Unamuno, presents a study in gestural abstraction. The composition relies on the interplay of heavy, directional brushwork and a high-contrast palette. Dark, near-black forms dominate the surface, creating a sense of turbulent movement that cuts across the canvas. These dark shapes are punctuated by streaks of primary and secondary colours, including ochre, vermilion, and cobalt blue. The application of paint suggests a rapid, physical engagement with the medium, where the texture of the brushstrokes remains visible to the viewer.
The title references Miguel de Unamuno, the Spanish philosopher and writer known for his existential inquiries. The visual language of the painting mirrors the intensity often associated with Unamuno's literary themes, such as the conflict between reason and faith, or the struggle of the individual against the void. Rather than depicting a literal subject, the artist employs non-representational forms to evoke a psychological state. The blue ground provides a cool, atmospheric base, which allows the warmer tones to appear as if they are emerging from or receding into the depths of the picture plane.
In terms of technique, the work avoids precise contours. Instead, it favours blurred edges and overlapping layers of pigment. This approach creates a sense of flux, as if the image is in a constant state of transition. The lack of a clear horizon line or defined perspective forces the viewer to engage with the painting as a purely visual experience. The balance between the dark, grounding elements and the lighter, more energetic strokes provides a structure to the otherwise chaotic arrangement of colour. This piece is an example of how abstract forms can be used to pay homage to intellectual figures, translating complex philosophical concepts into a visceral, visual format.
