A classic example of Josef Albers's iconic series, exploring the optical effects of nested squares through a monochromatic yellow palette.
Josef Albers began his series, Homage to the Square, in 1950. This body of work occupied the artist for the final twenty-six years of his career. Each piece follows a rigorous geometric structure consisting of three or four nested squares. The composition is mathematically precise, with the squares positioned to create a sense of recession or advancement through colour interaction alone.
Albers applied paint directly from the tube onto the rough side of masonite boards, using a palette knife to ensure a flat, even surface. This technique removed the evidence of the artist's hand, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the chromatic relationships. By placing different hues in proximity, Albers demonstrated how perception changes based on context. A yellow square may appear to recede or project depending on the tone of the square surrounding it.
This specific work explores a monochromatic yellow spectrum. The variations in saturation and brightness create a subtle vibration within the frame. Albers was interested in the discrepancy between physical fact and psychic effect. He argued that colour is the most relative medium in art, as it is never seen in isolation. The simplicity of the format acts as a vehicle for this investigation into optical phenomena.
As a former teacher at the Bauhaus, Albers brought a systematic approach to his practice. He documented his colour choices on the reverse of each board, noting the specific brands and mixtures used. This archival habit reflects his analytical approach to painting. The series remains a primary reference for the study of colour theory in the twentieth century. These prints capture the precise tonal shifts of the original works, offering a clear view of Albers's exploration of light and space through pure geometric form.
