A refined Mannerist composition by Maso da San Friano, depicting the Holy Family with Saint Catherine and the infant Saint John the Baptist.
Maso da San Friano, born Tommaso d’Antonio Manzuoli, was a significant figure in the Florentine Mannerist tradition. This composition displays the characteristic stylistic traits of the period, including elongated proportions, sophisticated poses, and a deliberate use of artificial lighting to model the figures. The scene depicts the Holy Family alongside the infant Saint John the Baptist and Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
The arrangement of the figures is tightly knit, creating a sense of sculptural density. The Virgin Mary occupies the centre, her gaze directed toward the Christ Child, who is held in a dynamic, twisting posture. To the left, Saint Catherine is shown in profile, her features rendered with a porcelain smoothness typical of the artist's refined technique. In the foreground, the young Saint John the Baptist points upward, a gesture that directs the viewer's attention through the composition. The colour palette is carefully controlled, relying on deep reds, cool blues, and muted earth tones to define the forms against a dark, atmospheric background.
Maso da San Friano was active during a period when Florentine art moved away from the balanced harmony of the High Renaissance toward more complex, intellectualised compositions. This work reflects that shift, prioritising elegance and technical artifice. The smooth application of paint and the precise definition of the figures demonstrate the artist's training and his ability to synthesise the influences of his contemporaries. The interaction between the figures is quiet and contemplative, avoiding overt drama in favour of a balanced, rhythmic arrangement. This print captures the subtle gradations of light and shadow, preserving the clarity of the original panel painting.
