This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the station of Hiratsuka, a stop along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. The composition captures a moment of travel, showing a palanquin being carried by two men, accompanied by a traveller on foot and a horse. The scene reflects the daily activity of the Edo period, where the Tokaido served as the primary artery for commerce and official travel.
Hokusai employs a clear, graphic style typical of his earlier work in the Ukiyo-e tradition. The figures are rendered with precise outlines, and the colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones to define the forms of the travellers and the surrounding environment. The inclusion of a stone marker and a pine tree provides a sense of place, grounding the figures within the specific geography of the Hiratsuka station.
