A detailed genre scene by Pieter de Bloot depicting the busy interior of a seventeenth-century Dutch lawyer's office.
Pieter de Bloot, a painter active in Rotterdam during the Dutch Golden Age, specialised in scenes of daily life. This work, titled Het kantoor van de advocaat, provides a view into the professional environment of a seventeenth-century legal office. The composition is organised around the functional activities of the space, with clerks stationed at desks and clients waiting in the foreground. The walls are lined with shelves holding bundles of documents, a common sight in the offices of notaries and lawyers of the period.
The scene captures the social stratification of the era. Figures of varying status are present, from the busy clerks behind their counters to the petitioners standing in the open area. De Bloot employs a muted palette, typical of his genre works, which allows the focus to remain on the narrative elements and the characterisation of the individuals. The lighting, entering through the windows on the back wall, creates a sense of depth and defines the spatial arrangement of the room. The inclusion of a dog in the foreground adds a touch of realism to the otherwise formal setting.
De Bloot is known for his attention to the textures of clothing and the architectural details of interiors. His work often reflects the preoccupation with order and bureaucracy that defined the urban Dutch experience. By documenting these mundane professional settings, he provides a record of the administrative life that supported the commerce and legal systems of the Dutch Republic. The print captures the monochromatic quality of the original painting, preserving the tonal balance and the specific atmosphere of the office. It is a study of human interaction within a structured, work-oriented environment, devoid of idealisation.
