A detailed 1778 etching by Christian Bernhard Rode depicting the historical military campaign of Herod the Great against cave-dwelling brigands.
Christian Bernhard Rode, a prominent figure in the Berlin art scene during the eighteenth century, produced this etching in 1778. The work depicts a dramatic narrative from the life of Herod the Great, specifically his efforts to suppress brigandage in the caves of Galilee. The composition is organised around a central, suspended wooden crate, which acts as a tactical device for the soldiers to reach the elevated hideouts of the robbers.
Rode employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of his graphic output. The etching captures the tension of the scene through varied hatching and cross-hatching, which define the rugged rock faces and the metallic sheen of the soldiers' armour. The figures are rendered with a focus on classical proportions and dynamic movement, reflecting the influence of his training in Paris and Rome. The foreground features a soldier directing the operation, while the mid-ground shows the combatants engaged in close-quarters struggle within the confined space of the cliffside.
The artist balances the chaotic nature of the skirmish with a structured, almost theatrical arrangement of elements. The verticality of the ropes and the crate draws the eye upward, contrasting with the horizontal sprawl of the rocky terrain below. This print demonstrates Rode's ability to translate complex historical narratives into a readable, graphic format. His work often drew upon biblical or classical themes, and this particular subject allowed for an exploration of both human conflict and architectural ingenuity in a natural setting. The fine lines and attention to detail provide a clear view of the weaponry and attire of the period, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic priorities of the late eighteenth-century German school.
