A 1603 portrait by Robert Peake the Elder depicting Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, and Sir John Harington in a formal hunting scene.
This portrait, painted in 1603, depicts Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, alongside his companion Sir John Harington. Robert Peake the Elder, who served as a painter to the court of James I, captures the young prince in a hunting setting. The composition reflects the formal conventions of early seventeenth-century English portraiture, where the subjects are presented with symbolic objects to denote their status and interests.
The prince stands prominently, holding a hunting spear, while Sir John Harington kneels beside a stag. The inclusion of the horse and the greyhound reinforces the theme of the hunt, a pursuit associated with the aristocracy and the training of young noblemen. The figures are dressed in matching green doublets and breeches, a stylistic choice that emphasises their close association.
Peake employs a flattened perspective, typical of the period, where the figures appear somewhat detached from the background. The background itself features a wooded area with a distant view of a river and deer, rendered with attention to detail rather than atmospheric depth. The lighting is even, allowing for a clear view of the textures of the clothing, the sheen of the horse, and the facial features of the two youths. This work provides insight into the visual culture of the Jacobean court, where portraiture functioned as a means of documenting lineage and the expected roles of the nobility. The painting remains a significant example of Peake's output during his tenure as a court artist, documenting the appearance of the prince before his untimely death in 1612.
