A seminal work of Metaphysical Art, this 1917 painting depicts the mythological farewell of Hector and Andromache through faceless, mannequin-like forms.
Hector and Andromache (1917) is a representative work of Giorgio de Chirico, the founder of the Metaphysical Art movement. The painting depicts the mythological figures of Hector and Andromache as faceless, mannequin-like forms. De Chirico frequently utilised these tailor-dummy figures to represent human characters, stripping them of individual identity and placing them within a stage-like, architectural environment. The figures are constructed from geometric shapes, wooden slats, and mechanical components, suggesting a sense of artificiality and stillness.
The composition is defined by a stark, theatrical quality. The figures are locked in a final embrace, a reference to the farewell scene from Homer's Iliad before Hector departs for his final battle. Despite the emotional weight of the subject, the treatment is detached and clinical. The palette consists of muted browns, ochres, and deep reds, set against a dark, atmospheric background that creates a sense of isolation. The floorboards are rendered with a forced perspective, a common device in de Chirico's work to create an unsettling, dream-like space.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in the uncanny, where familiar objects are placed in unfamiliar contexts to provoke a sense of mystery. By replacing the classical heroes with these rigid, constructed forms, de Chirico comments on the nature of memory and the passage of time. The lack of facial features prevents the viewer from reading human emotion in the traditional sense, forcing a focus on the structural arrangement and the spatial relationships within the frame. The work remains a primary example of how de Chirico merged classical themes with modern, industrial aesthetics to create a unique visual language.
