A detailed etching by Peter Moran depicting the traditional threshing of grain with horses in San Juan, New Mexico.
Peter Moran, a member of a prominent family of American artists, was well known for his technical proficiency in etching and his interest in the American West. This work captures a scene of agricultural activity at San Juan, New Mexico, during the late nineteenth century. The composition centres on a group of horses being driven around a large, central stack of harvested grain, a traditional method of threshing. Figures are positioned to the left and right, wielding whips to maintain the movement of the animals.
Moran employs a dense network of etched lines to define the textures of the hay, the musculature of the horses, and the atmospheric quality of the sky. The clouds are rendered with vigorous, directional strokes that suggest a heavy, overcast day. The ground is textured with short, quick marks that convey the uneven, dry terrain of the region. In the distance, the faint silhouette of a settlement provides a sense of scale and context to the rural activity in the foreground.
As an etcher, Moran was highly regarded for his ability to translate the tonal variations of a scene into a monochromatic medium. He avoids excessive detail in the background, allowing the viewer to focus on the kinetic energy of the horses and the rhythmic motion of the workers. The print demonstrates his observational approach to the subjects he encountered during his travels through the American territories. By documenting these specific regional practices, Moran contributed to a broader visual record of life in the West during a period of significant change. The work remains a clear example of his skill in capturing both the physical environment and the human labour required to sustain life in such a setting.
