Alfred Wallis, a former Cornish fisherman and scrap merchant, began painting in his late sixties. He possessed no formal training, yet his work captures the essence of maritime life with a directness that appealed to the St Ives modernists who discovered him. Wallis frequently utilised scavenged materials, often painting on irregular pieces of cardboard or wooden boxes.
