This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the station of Hara, a location on the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. It belongs to the Kyoka iri Tokaido series, which is distinguished by the inclusion of kyoka, or comic verse, inscribed directly onto the print. The composition is dominated by the massive, triangular form of Mount Fuji, which rises behind the modest dwellings of the post station. Hiroshige employs a clear, layered approach to space: the foreground features travellers and pack horses near simple buildings, the middle ground contains a flat expanse of water, and the background is occupied by the mountain.

The colour palette relies on the characteristic blue tones of the period, contrasted with the soft, earthy pink of the mountain peak. The lines are precise and clean, typical of the ukiyo-e tradition, which prioritised clarity of form and decorative balance. The inclusion of the poem adds a literary dimension to the visual record of the journey, reflecting the cultural habits of travellers who documented their experiences through both image and text. Hiroshige was a master of atmospheric conditions, and here he captures the stillness of a clear day.
