A fine art print of a traditional Japanese handscroll by Miyagawa Chōshun, depicting a scene from a series of Nanshoku erotic paintings.
Miyagawa Chōshun was a prominent painter of the Ukiyo-e school during the Edo period. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on woodblock printing, Chōshun worked primarily in painting, producing works that captured the social customs and private lives of the urban population. This handscroll belongs to the genre of Shunga, or erotic art, specifically depicting Nanshoku, which refers to male-male sexual relationships in historical Japan.
The composition is characteristic of the Miyagawa school, featuring figures with rounded faces, soft features, and elegant postures. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the contours of the kimono and the gentle expressions of the subjects. The use of colour is restrained, relying on muted tones that harmonise with the aged silk background. The figures are placed within a sparse environment, directing the viewer's attention to the interaction between the two individuals. The attention to detail in the textile patterns of the garments reflects the fashion of the period, while the inclusion of personal items, such as the sword resting nearby, provides context regarding the social status of the figures.
Chōshun is recognised for his ability to convey intimacy through subtle gestures and gazes rather than overt action. This scroll is a representative example of the sophisticated aesthetic applied to erotic subjects in eighteenth-century Japan. It demonstrates the technical skill of the artist in managing the long, horizontal format of the handscroll, which allows for a narrative progression across the surface. The work remains a valuable record of the cultural and social attitudes toward gender and sexuality in the Edo period, presented with the refined brushwork and balanced composition that define the Miyagawa style.
