This ink painting by the Japanese nun and poet Ōtagaki Rengetsu depicts the legendary figure Hakuzosu. In Japanese folklore, Hakuzosu is a fox-spirit who assumes the guise of a Buddhist monk to protect his kin. Rengetsu captures the subject with characteristic economy, using minimal brushwork to convey the fox-spirit's hooded form and contemplative posture. The figure stands amidst tall, sparse grasses, rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines that suggest movement in a gentle breeze.
Rengetsu was a prominent figure in the Bunjinga tradition, which valued the personal expression of the artist over technical perfection. Her work often combines painting with her own calligraphy, reflecting her life as a Buddhist practitioner. The composition relies on the interplay between empty space and ink wash, a technique known as yohaku-no-bi. The fox-spirit is portrayed with a sense of quiet dignity, his features subtly suggested rather than explicitly defined. The muted palette of grey tones and black ink creates a sense of stillness, consistent with the meditative quality of her broader body of work.
As a woman artist in the nineteenth century, Rengetsu maintained a unique position, producing ceramics and paintings that were highly regarded for their simplicity and spiritual depth.
