Hakone: View of the Lake - Utagawa Hiroshige

A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the rugged mountain pass and lake at Hakone from his famous Tokaido series.

This woodblock print is part of the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, a collection that established Utagawa Hiroshige as a master of the genre. The composition depicts the mountainous terrain surrounding Lake Ashi in Hakone. The steep, jagged cliffs dominate the foreground, rendered with sharp, angular forms that contrast with the calm, expansive surface of the water. Travellers are visible on the narrow mountain path, providing a sense of scale against the imposing geological features.

Hiroshige employs a distinct colour palette, utilising gradients of blue for the water and sky, alongside earthy greens and ochres for the rock faces. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo-period woodblock process, where multiple carved blocks were used to build the final image. The atmospheric perspective, particularly in the distant mountain ranges, creates a sense of depth and distance. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper left corner identifies the location and the series, a standard feature of this publication.

Unlike the more urban scenes found elsewhere in the Tokaido series, this work focuses on the rugged nature of the Hakone pass. It captures the physical difficulty of the journey, as the path winds through the dense forest and rocky outcrops.
