A 1913 Synthetic Cubist still life by Juan Gris, featuring a guitar and pipe rendered through geometric planes and a muted, earthy colour palette.
Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. In this 1913 composition, Guitar and Pipe, Gris demonstrates his methodical approach to the deconstruction of everyday objects. Unlike the earlier, more fragmented Analytic Cubism, this work employs flatter planes and a clearer structural logic. The guitar, a recurring motif in his oeuvre, is rendered through overlapping geometric shapes that suggest its form without relying on traditional perspective.
The palette is restrained, favouring earthy ochres, deep blues, and muted pinks, which allow the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the surface. Gris integrates the pipe and the instrument into a cohesive arrangement, where the boundaries between the objects and the surrounding space become porous. The artist uses a combination of opaque paint and subtle gradients to define the volume of the guitar body and the neck.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in the mathematical precision of painting. He often spoke of his desire to create a new reality rather than merely imitating the physical world. By flattening the pictorial space, Gris forces the eye to navigate the composition as a series of related parts. The signature, visible in the upper left, confirms his authorship during a period when he was refining his unique contribution to the Parisian avant-garde. The work remains a clear example of how the Cubist movement reconfigured the traditional still life genre, moving away from illusionism toward a more conceptual representation of form and space.
