Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. In this 1920 composition, he explores the relationship between musical instruments and the flat surface of the canvas. The work displays the characteristic rigour of his mature period, where objects are deconstructed into geometric planes and reassembled to suggest multiple viewpoints simultaneously.

The guitar and clarinet are rendered through a series of overlapping shapes, which flatten the traditional perspective of the still life.
