A direct oil study by Thomas Fearnley, capturing the dramatic waterfalls and rugged mountain terrain of Gudvangen, Norway, in 1839.
Thomas Fearnley, a prominent figure in nineteenth-century Norwegian art, produced this study of Gudvangen in 1839. The work captures the dramatic topography of the Nærøyfjord region, a site that drew many artists during the Romantic period. Fearnley focuses on the sheer verticality of the mountain walls, which are punctuated by multiple cascading waterfalls. The artist employs a direct, painterly approach, using visible brushwork to convey the rugged texture of the rock faces and the ephemeral quality of the falling water.
The composition is dominated by the steep, dark slopes that frame the central gorge. Fearnley uses a palette of deep browns, ochres, and muted greens to describe the terrain, contrasting these earthy tones with the pale, translucent whites of the water. The sky, visible at the top of the frame, provides a brief respite from the heavy mass of the mountains, rendered in lighter, cooler tones. This study reflects the artist's practice of working directly from nature, a method that allowed him to capture the immediate atmospheric conditions of the Norwegian wilderness.
Unlike the highly finished studio paintings of the era, this work retains the spontaneity of a field sketch. The inscription in the lower right corner, noting the location and date, confirms its status as a record of the artist's travels. The work provides insight into the technical process of a painter who sought to document the specific character of his native geography. By focusing on the interplay between the solid rock and the fluid motion of the water, Fearnley creates a sense of scale and natural power. This piece remains a clear example of the observational rigour applied by artists of the period when engaging with the dramatic scenery of the North.
