A traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting women on a veranda during the cherry blossom season, featuring a shamisen player.
This woodblock print by Utamaro II depicts a scene of leisure within a traditional Japanese architectural setting. The composition centres on a group of women positioned on the engawa, a wooden veranda that acts as a transition between the interior of the house and the garden. One woman holds a shamisen, suggesting a moment of musical performance or social gathering. The figures are dressed in patterned kimonos, with the artist employing a muted colour palette to define the textiles and the surrounding environment.
The background features a view of a garden during the cherry blossom season, with stylised trees and a flowing stream. The architectural lines of the veranda provide a geometric structure that contrasts with the organic forms of the figures and the natural elements outside. Utamaro II, who succeeded the famous Kitagawa Utamaro, maintained the focus on bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, which was a primary subject of the Ukiyo-e school during the Edo period.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clear outlines and a balanced distribution of colour. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions characteristic of the period, and their postures convey a sense of quiet interaction. The inclusion of the shamisen adds a layer of narrative, implying a domestic scene of refinement. This work offers a view into the aesthetic values of the early nineteenth century, where the depiction of daily life and seasonal change remained a central theme for printmakers. The print is a representative example of the genre, showing the continuity of style and subject matter within the Utamaro lineage.
