A striking abstract composition by Alexander Calder, featuring organic forms in red, black, and grey suspended against a bright yellow ground.
Alexander Calder is widely recognised for his kinetic sculptures and mobiles, yet his two-dimensional work in gouache reveals a similar preoccupation with balance, weight, and spatial relationships. In this composition, the artist employs a bright yellow ground to support a series of organic, rounded shapes. The central grey oval acts as the anchor for the surrounding forms, which vary in size and colour.
Calder uses a limited palette of red, black, white, and grey against the saturated yellow background. The application of paint is direct and unadorned, showing the brushwork and the physical movement of the artist's hand. Unlike his metal constructions, which rely on physical gravity to achieve equilibrium, these gouache works create a sense of balance through the careful placement of colour and mass on a flat surface.
The shapes do not adhere to a rigid grid. Instead, they appear to float or drift across the paper, suggesting a state of suspension. This approach reflects the artist's interest in the cosmos and the movement of celestial bodies, a theme that appears throughout his career. The lack of perspective or depth allows the viewer to focus entirely on the interaction between the shapes and the negative space.
This print captures the immediacy of Calder's gouache technique. The edges of the forms are soft, lacking the mechanical precision of his wire work, which provides a more human and tactile quality to the composition. By reducing his visual language to basic geometric and organic elements, Calder invites the viewer to engage with the fundamental properties of form and colour. The work functions as a study in visual rhythm, where the placement of each element dictates the flow of the viewer's eye across the page.
