Beschreibung
Gretna in Dumfries and Galloway gathers below a vast flock of birds, with a stone river bridge, white falling water and pale town houses beneath a softly glowing blue and peach sky.
On the Scottish side of the English border, the modern town was planned during the First World War to house munitions-factory workers. It sits beside the older settlements of Gretna Green and Springfield, where routes towards the River Sark connect the town with its border landscape.
At Gretna, a dense flock forms a broad curling canopy across the sky. Below, a pale stone bridge crosses reflective water above a foaming diagonal weir. Cream houses and a red brick building stand among leafy trees on the far bank. Peach-coloured cloud near the horizon and dense foliage suggest the quiet light of a late summer evening.
