A traditional Japanese ink painting of a grapevine, rendered with expressive brushwork and subtle ink washes on silk.
This hanging scroll, attributed to the Japanese artist Ban Jogon, presents a study of a grapevine executed in ink on silk. The composition follows the traditions of Bunjinga, or literati painting, which prioritised the expressive quality of the brushstroke over strict naturalistic representation. The artist employs varying densities of ink to differentiate the textures of the gnarled, woody stem from the softer, serrated leaves and the clusters of fruit.
The vine occupies the central portion of the vertical format, with its tendrils reaching outwards in delicate, sweeping lines. These calligraphic strokes demonstrate the artist's control, as they capture the organic movement of the plant. The leaves are rendered with washes that suggest depth and shadow, while the grapes are depicted with subtle ink gradations that imply volume. The negative space surrounding the subject is intentional, allowing the viewer to focus on the balance between the solid forms of the vine and the lighter, more fluid elements of the foliage.
Accompanying the image is a column of calligraphy, a common feature in this genre, which integrates the visual and literary arts. The presence of red seals provides a visual counterpoint to the monochrome ink, marking the work with the artist's signature and provenance. The muted palette, dominated by shades of charcoal and sepia, reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where simplicity and restraint were highly regarded. This print captures the essence of the original silk scroll, maintaining the tonal range and the specific character of the ink work. It is a representative example of the scholarly approach to nature, where the subject serves as a vehicle for the artist's technical skill and philosophical outlook.
