Georges Seurat painted Grandcamp, Evening in 1885 during his summer stay in the coastal town of Grandcamp in Normandy. This work demonstrates his systematic approach to colour theory, known as Divisionism or Pointillism. Rather than mixing pigments on the palette, Seurat applied small, distinct dots of colour directly onto the canvas, allowing the viewer's eye to blend them optically from a distance.
The composition captures a quiet, atmospheric view of the coastline at dusk. The horizon line is placed low, emphasising the expansive sky and the calm waters of the English Channel. To the left, a stone wall and foliage frame the scene, providing a sense of depth and perspective that leads the eye toward the distant shore and a solitary boat. The palette is restrained, focusing on soft blues, greys, and muted greens that reflect the fading light of the evening.
Seurat was interested in the scientific study of light and perception. By breaking down the image into individual points of colour, he sought to achieve a luminosity that traditional brushwork could not replicate. Seurat's most famous work, *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte*, exemplifies his revolutionary approach. Unveiled at the eighth (and final) Impressionist exhibition, its rigid, almost statuesque figures, built from countless tiny dots, caused a sensation. While some critics derided its perceived coldness and artificiality, others recognised the dawn of a new era. Seurat sought to bring scientific rigour to artistic expression, studying colour theory and optics to maximise the visual impact of his paintings.
Beyond *La Grande Jatte*, Seurat's oeuvre includes captivating seascapes, portraits, and scenes of Parisian nightlife, all rendered with his signature Pointillist technique. Works such as *Bathers at Asnières* and *The Circus* demonstrate his continued exploration of colour, light, and form. Though his career was brief, Georges Seurat's innovative approach to painting cemented his place as a pivotal figure in Post-Impressionism, influencing generations of artists to come.
