Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, produced this view of the Grand Canal during his mature period. The composition captures the waterway from the perspective of the Palazzo Balbi, looking towards the Rialto Bridge. Canaletto utilised a camera obscura to assist with the precise architectural rendering, a common practice for Venetian vedutisti of the eighteenth century. The work demonstrates his technical control over light and atmospheric perspective, particularly in the treatment of the sky and the reflection of the buildings upon the water.

The scene is populated with various vessels, including gondolas and larger transport boats, which provide a sense of daily activity within the city.
