A detailed watercolour study of the ancient ruins along the Via Appia by Italian artist Carlo Labruzzi, capturing the intersection of history and the coast.
This watercolour by Carlo Labruzzi depicts the ancient ruins along the Via Appia, a subject that occupied the artist during his extensive travels through the Italian countryside. Labruzzi, a Roman painter and engraver, gained recognition for his meticulous documentation of the Appian Way, commissioned by the British antiquarian Sir Richard Colt Hoare. The work captures the intersection of classical history and the natural environment, showing the weathered stone structures of the tomb against a coastal horizon.
Labruzzi employs a light, airy palette, characteristic of his topographical studies. The composition balances the foreground figures, who rest near the ruins, with the distant view of the sea and the promontory of Gaeta. His technique involves precise ink outlines filled with washes of watercolour, allowing the texture of the stone and the soft quality of the Mediterranean light to emerge. The inclusion of small figures provides a sense of scale, grounding the ancient architecture in the daily life of the late eighteenth century.
Unlike the dramatic, idealised scenes common in the period, this work maintains a documentary quality. It reflects the interest of the Grand Tour era in mapping and recording the physical remnants of the Roman Empire. The artist focuses on the interplay between the crumbling masonry and the encroaching vegetation, documenting the state of the site as it appeared during his journey. The work serves as a record of the historical path, preserving the appearance of the Via Appia before modern development altered its character. Through his careful observation, Labruzzi provides a window into the intersection of archaeology and travel during the late eighteenth century, capturing the quiet atmosphere of the Italian coast.
