A nineteenth-century lithograph by Sasadhar Banarjee depicting the Hindu deity Bagalamukhi in a traditional iconographic style.
This lithograph depicts the Hindu deity Bagalamukhi, one of the Mahavidyas. The print, produced by Sasadhar Banarjee in the late nineteenth century, reflects the popular religious art style of the period, often associated with the early commercial presses of Calcutta. The composition follows traditional iconographic conventions, showing the goddess in a dominant posture, wielding a club to subdue a demon. Her presence is marked by a radiant halo, while a lion rests at her feet, symbolising her power and connection to the divine feminine.
The aesthetic of the piece combines indigenous stylistic elements with the technical influence of European lithographic printing. The soft, muted colour palette and the fine, cross-hatched shading techniques are characteristic of the prints distributed to households across Bengal during this era. These works served as accessible devotional objects, bringing religious narratives into the domestic sphere. The inclusion of Sanskrit text at the base provides a liturgical context for the image, identifying the deity and offering a meditative verse for the viewer.
Sasadhar Banarjee was a notable figure in the production of these religious prints, which played a role in the visual culture of colonial India. The print captures a moment of mythological action, balancing the ferocity of the goddess with a composed, formal arrangement of figures. The architectural backdrop and the natural elements, such as the trees and ground, are rendered with a focus on clarity and narrative legibility. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of traditional religious practice and the emergence of mass-produced visual media in late nineteenth-century India.
