A detailed nineteenth-century watercolour depicting the coastal settlement of Anjer, Java, capturing the daily life and tropical environment of the port.
This watercolour depicts the coastal settlement of Anjer on the island of Java during the mid-nineteenth century. Charles William Meredith van de Velde, a Dutch naval officer and cartographer, produced this work during his travels in the Dutch East Indies. The composition follows the conventions of colonial topographical art, prioritising a clear, panoramic view of the harbour and the surrounding tropical environment.
In the foreground, the shoreline features a group of figures engaged in fishing, their forms rendered with precise, small brushstrokes. To the left, two individuals stand on the grassy bank, observing the scene. The middle ground contains a collection of modest dwellings and structures, sheltered by a cluster of tall palm trees. The background reveals a soft, undulating range of hills, fading into the atmospheric haze of the horizon. The sky occupies a significant portion of the frame, filled with light, billowing clouds that suggest the humid climate of the region.
Van de Velde utilised a muted palette of greens, ochres, and soft blues to capture the coastal light. His technique reflects the training of a surveyor, as the architectural elements and the spatial relationships between the land and the sea are delineated with care. The work provides a visual record of the maritime activity and colonial presence in Java during this period. It avoids the dramatic flair often associated with European Romanticism, opting instead for a documentary approach that captures the quiet, daily rhythms of the port. The inclusion of the border frame suggests this piece was intended for a portfolio or as a study for a larger lithographic publication, common for travellers documenting their expeditions to distant territories.
