A detailed nineteenth-century watercolour of the Swiss town of Thun, featuring the medieval castle set against the backdrop of the Bernese Alps.
Charles William Meredith van de Velde, a Dutch naval officer and artist, produced this watercolour depicting the Swiss town of Thun. The composition captures the town as it sits upon a rise, dominated by the medieval castle and church spires. In the background, the peaks of the Bernese Alps rise into the sky, rendered with a soft, atmospheric quality typical of nineteenth-century topographical studies.
The foreground features a gentle, grassy slope dotted with trees, leading the eye toward the settlement. The artist uses a muted palette of greens, ochres, and pale blues to convey the light of a clear day. The architecture of the castle, with its distinctive towers, serves as the primary structural element of the scene. Van de Velde demonstrates a precise hand in his treatment of the buildings, balancing architectural detail with the broader, sweeping forms of the mountainous terrain.
This work reflects the interest in European travel and the documentation of picturesque locations that occupied many artists during the mid-nineteenth century. Van de Velde, who travelled extensively during his naval career, often recorded his observations in sketchbooks and finished watercolours. His approach is observational, prioritising clarity and a sense of place. The work is held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, where it is catalogued as part of their extensive holdings of Dutch drawings and prints. The print captures the delicate washes and fine brushwork of the original, preserving the subtle transitions between the sunlit foreground and the distant, hazy mountain range.
