A detailed topographical drawing of Rome by Dutch artist Jacob de Heusch, featuring fine graphite lines and subtle grey wash.
This drawing by Jacob de Heusch captures a panoramic view of Rome, rendered with the precision characteristic of the Dutch Italianate tradition. De Heusch, who spent significant time in Italy, was known for his ability to translate the light and atmosphere of the Mediterranean into his compositions. The work employs a delicate use of graphite and grey wash to define the architectural silhouettes of the city against the distant hills.
The composition is structured to draw the eye across the Tiber, moving from the foreground details of a small cart and boat towards the sprawling urban expanse. The artist uses subtle tonal variations in the wash to suggest the depth of the Roman skyline, punctuated by the domes and towers that define the city's profile. The right side of the frame is anchored by a steep, grassy embankment, which provides a sense of scale and frames the wider view of the city centre.
Unlike the more dramatic, theatrical interpretations of Rome produced by some of his contemporaries, this study maintains a measured, observational quality. The line work is fine and controlled, reflecting the artist's training and his focus on capturing the topographical reality of the site. The sky remains largely unworked, allowing the architecture to remain the primary subject of the piece. This drawing offers a glimpse into the practice of seventeenth-century artists who travelled to Italy to document the classical and contemporary structures of the city. It is a quiet, contemplative work that documents the appearance of Rome during the late seventeenth century, preserved here with the clarity of the original ink and wash techniques.
