Johann Ludwig Aberli was a central figure in the development of Swiss topographical art during the eighteenth century. This print depicts the area near Le Pout, situated by the Lac de Joux in the Jura Mountains. Aberli developed a specific technique, often referred to as the Aberli manner, which involved creating a delicate etched outline that was subsequently finished with subtle watercolour washes. This method allowed for the mass production of high-quality views that appealed to the growing market of travellers and collectors interested in the Alpine region.
The composition follows a traditional topographical structure. A rocky outcrop occupies the foreground, providing a sense of scale and framing the view of the lake and the distant hills.
