A detailed graphite and gouache drawing of Istanbul's harbour, capturing the city skyline and maritime activity from the Golden Horn.
This drawing by Coke Smyth captures the maritime atmosphere of Istanbul during the mid-nineteenth century. Viewed from the Golden Horn, the composition focuses on the interplay between the bustling harbour and the architectural silhouette of the old city. The artist employs a delicate graphite technique, supplemented by white gouache highlights, to define the forms of the ships and the distant mosques.
Smyth was a traveller and artist who documented various regions during his career. His work often reflects the European fascination with the Ottoman Empire, a common theme among artists of the period. The foreground features a small rowing boat, which provides a sense of scale against the larger sailing vessels anchored in the harbour. The background shows the iconic domes and minarets of the city, rendered with precision to convey the specific character of the skyline.
The use of toned paper allows the white gouache to create a sense of light on the water and the clouds, adding depth to the scene. Smyth avoids excessive detail in the distant architecture, preferring to suggest the density of the city through light and shadow. This approach maintains the focus on the movement of the water and the activity of the port. The drawing functions as a record of a specific place and time, capturing the intersection of trade and urban life in a major port city. It reflects the observational skills required of artists who accompanied diplomatic or exploratory missions during the nineteenth century, providing a visual account of locations that were then becoming more accessible to Western travellers.
