An architectural study by Jan Otto depicting the 'Turkse Tent', a garden folly near Amsterdam influenced by Chinoiserie design.
This architectural study by Jan Otto depicts the 'Turkse Tent', a folly located in the Watergraafsmeer area near Amsterdam. During the eighteenth century, the Dutch elite frequently commissioned garden structures that drew inspiration from Eastern architecture. Despite the name, the design exhibits clear influences from Chinese pagoda forms, reflecting the widespread European fascination with Chinoiserie during this period.
The drawing presents two distinct elevations of the structure. The left figure shows a single-storey pavilion with a tiled roof, featuring upturned eaves and small hanging bells. The right figure illustrates a taller, two-storey version of the same structure, incorporating arched openings at the base and a more complex roof arrangement. Otto employs a precise, clean line quality to define the masonry, the lattice windows, and the decorative roof tiles. The composition is stark and functional, intended as a record or a proposal for the garden feature rather than a finished pictorial work.
Such drawings provide insight into the recreational habits of the Dutch merchant class, who sought to transform their country estates into exotic retreats. The inclusion of the 'Turkse Tent' in the Watergraafsmeer highlights the integration of fantasy architecture into the Dutch polder landscape. The work remains a valuable record of ephemeral garden structures that have largely disappeared from the modern environment. By documenting these follies, Otto captured a specific moment in the history of garden design where global aesthetic influences were adapted to local tastes. The simplicity of the graphite medium allows the viewer to focus on the structural logic and the ornamental details of the pavilions, such as the dragon-like finials and the geometric patterns on the lower walls.
