A 1666 pen and ink drawing by Willem Romeyn, depicting a serene scene along the Tiber with figures and cattle in the Italianate style.
This drawing by Willem Romeyn, dated 1666, captures a quiet moment along the banks of the Tiber. Romeyn was a member of the Dutch Italianate painters, a group of artists who travelled to Italy to study the light and topography of the Mediterranean. Upon returning to the Netherlands, they incorporated these observations into their work, often blending the specific atmospheric qualities of Italy with the compositional traditions of the Dutch school.
The composition features a riverbank where a small group of figures rests beside their cattle. To the right, the bank rises towards a cluster of buildings, rendered with delicate pen strokes and subtle grey washes. The architecture reflects the vernacular style of the Roman countryside, with simple dwellings and stone structures that suggest a rural, timeless existence. The left side of the drawing opens up to the river, where a small boat is moored near a bridge. The use of wash creates a soft, diffused light, typical of the artist's approach to capturing the warmth of the Italian sun.
Romeyn's technique relies on the economy of line. He uses ink to define the structural elements of the buildings and the figures, while the grey wash provides depth and volume to the clouds and the river. The scene is devoid of grand narrative, focusing instead on the observation of daily life in a foreign setting. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to translate the experience of travel into a refined, monochromatic study. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece, preserving the artist's original marks and the subtle gradations of the wash. It is a representative example of the seventeenth-century interest in the Italian countryside, viewed through the lens of a Dutch draughtsman.
