The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century Dutch topographical art, utilising a balanced arrangement of foreground elements to frame the middle distance. On the left, a large, gnarled tree provides a dark anchor, beneath which a figure sits, perhaps resting or attending to fishing gear. The water occupies the centre, reflecting the soft, diffused light of a cloudy day. A small sailing vessel glides across the surface, while a second, smaller boat is moored near the right bank, where a fisherman tends to his nets and baskets.
Van Rossum employs a delicate technique of pen and ink, supplemented by subtle grey washes to define the atmospheric depth. The background features the characteristic architecture of the Dutch countryside, including a distant windmill and modest dwellings nestled among dense foliage.
