A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Jan Veenhuysen showing the Nieuwe Stadsherberg, the historic city inn located on the Amsterdam waterfront.
This etching by Jan Veenhuysen depicts the Nieuwe Stadsherberg, or New City Inn, which once occupied a prominent position on the waterfront of the IJ in Amsterdam. During the seventeenth century, this building functioned as a primary arrival point for travellers entering the city by water. Veenhuysen captures the structure with the precision characteristic of Dutch topographical printmaking from this period.
The composition focuses on the inn, a substantial building with a symmetrical facade and a pedimented roofline. In the foreground, the artist includes several sailing vessels moored at the wooden piers. These ships provide a sense of scale and activity, reflecting the maritime nature of Amsterdam's economy during the Dutch Golden Age. The lines are clean and descriptive, typical of the etching techniques used to document urban development and civic architecture for contemporary audiences.
Veenhuysen was active in Amsterdam during the mid-to-late seventeenth century, a time when the city was expanding rapidly. His work often documented the changing face of the capital, providing a visual record of its infrastructure and harbour life. The inclusion of the title in both Dutch and French, 'Nieuwe Stadsherberg' and 'la Neufve Hostelerie de la Ville', suggests that this print was intended for a wider audience, perhaps including international merchants or visitors who frequented the city. The print offers a clear view of the architectural style of the era, characterised by functional, sturdy brickwork and large windows designed to accommodate the needs of a busy port city. The work is a document of seventeenth-century urban planning and the daily life of a bustling European trade centre.
