A detailed 1763 etching by Noël Le Mire depicting the busy harbour of Bruges, featuring sailing vessels and figures on the quay.
This etching and engraving by Noël Le Mire depicts the bustling maritime activity of the Bruges harbour. The composition is structured around several large sailing vessels, their masts and rigging rendered with precision. The artist captures the texture of the water and the atmospheric quality of the sky through varied line weights and cross-hatching techniques. In the foreground, figures are gathered on the quay, engaged in the daily commerce of the port, while smaller boats navigate the space between the larger ships.
Le Mire, a French engraver active during the eighteenth century, demonstrates technical control in the handling of light and shadow across the hulls of the ships and the ripples of the harbour. The inclusion of a coat of arms at the bottom centre provides a formal, heraldic element to the print, suggesting it was commissioned or intended for a specific collection. The work reflects the period interest in topographical and maritime subjects, documenting the appearance of European ports during the mid-eighteenth century.
The print is characterised by its attention to nautical detail, from the configuration of the sails to the structural elements of the vessels. The scene conveys a sense of scale, with the ships dominating the harbour space. The human activity on the shore provides a narrative counterpoint to the static nature of the anchored vessels. This piece is a representative example of the printmaking traditions of the era, where technical skill was applied to document both the physical world and the commercial life of major trading centres. The work remains a clear record of the maritime infrastructure of Bruges as it appeared in 1763, offering a view into the historical appearance of the city.
