A 1926 lithograph by Robert Delaunay, offering a dynamic, elevated perspective of the Eiffel Tower and the Champ-de-Mars.
This lithograph by Robert Delaunay captures the Eiffel Tower from an unconventional, elevated perspective. Delaunay, a central figure in the development of early twentieth-century French modernism, returned to the subject of the Eiffel Tower repeatedly throughout his career. This specific work, dated 1926, demonstrates his interest in the structural dynamism of the monument rather than a literal representation of the Parisian skyline.
The composition employs a bird-eye view that flattens the architectural form of the tower against the surrounding space. Delaunay uses soft, charcoal-like shading to create a sense of atmospheric movement, contrasting the rigid geometry of the tower with the swirling, nebulous forms of the Champ-de-Mars below. The lines are deliberate, focusing on the intersection of planes and the interplay of light and shadow. By distorting the scale and orientation of the tower, the artist invites the viewer to consider the structure as a series of rhythmic, abstract shapes.
This print reflects the artist's transition from his earlier, more fragmented Cubist experiments toward the fluid, light-filled aesthetic of Orphism. The work avoids excessive detail, opting instead for a focus on the energy of the urban environment. The monochromatic medium of lithography allows for a focus on tonal variation, where the dark, dense areas of the park provide a stark contrast to the lighter, skeletal frame of the tower. It is a study in perspective and form, characteristic of Delaunay's fascination with the modern city as a subject for artistic exploration.
