A 1872 albumen print by Kassian Céphas documenting the Borobudur temple in Java, capturing the architectural detail of the site.
This albumen print by Kassian Céphas captures the Borobudur temple in Java as it appeared in 1872. Céphas, the first indigenous Indonesian professional photographer, documented the site with technical precision. The composition presents the massive Buddhist monument from a ground-level perspective, framed by trees that provide a sense of scale against the stone structure. The image reveals the weathered textures of the stupas and the relief-covered walls, documenting the state of the site before extensive restoration efforts began in the early twentieth century.
Céphas operated his studio in Yogyakarta, where he gained recognition for his portraits of Javanese nobility and his documentation of local architecture. His work provides a rare perspective on the cultural heritage of the Dutch East Indies. The sepia tones of the albumen process lend a soft, atmospheric quality to the stone surfaces, while the clear light allows for the observation of the temple's geometric tiers. This photograph functions as both a historical record and a study of light on ancient masonry. By choosing this specific angle, Céphas emphasises the horizontal expanse of the monument, allowing the viewer to appreciate the architectural rhythm of the galleries. The print remains a significant example of nineteenth-century documentary photography, reflecting the intersection of local expertise and the emerging medium of the camera in Southeast Asia.
