A detailed eighteenth-century topographical drawing of the port of Colombo, Ceylon, by Dutch East India Company official Pieter de Bevere.
This drawing by Pieter de Bevere depicts the coastal fortifications and harbour of Colombo, Ceylon, as observed during the mid-eighteenth century. De Bevere, a Dutch official and amateur artist, documented various colonial outposts during his tenure with the Dutch East India Company. The composition focuses on the expansive maritime view, placing the fortified city in the distance while foregrounding several vessels typical of the period, including a large merchant ship and smaller local craft.
The draughtsmanship is precise, utilising fine ink lines and subtle wash to suggest the atmospheric conditions of the Indian Ocean. The artist prioritises topographical accuracy, capturing the layout of the ramparts and the prominent structures within the city walls. The horizon line is kept low, allowing the sky to occupy a significant portion of the frame, which creates a sense of openness characteristic of maritime records from this era. The inclusion of various ships provides a sense of scale and activity, reflecting the importance of Colombo as a trading hub for the Dutch East India Company.
As a historical document, the work offers insight into the visual culture of colonial administration. De Bevere did not aim for dramatic effect, but rather for a clear, descriptive account of the geography and infrastructure of the port. The muted palette and restrained technique are consistent with the conventions of eighteenth-century cartographic and topographical illustration. This print captures a specific moment in the history of the region, documenting the architectural presence of the Dutch in Ceylon before the subsequent shifts in colonial control. It remains a valuable record for those interested in maritime history and the visual documentation of global trade routes during the Enlightenment period.
