A detailed topographical drawing of the village of Bergen-Enkheim, featuring rural agricultural scenes and soft ink wash shading.
This drawing by Johann Goll van Frankenstein (I) captures a rural view of Bergen-Enkheim, situated near Frankfurt. The work demonstrates the artist's interest in topographical accuracy and the quiet observation of provincial life during the eighteenth century. The composition is structured around a central path that leads the eye toward the distant village, marked by the distinct silhouette of a church spire.
To the left, a figure works the land with a plough, providing a sense of scale and human activity against the open fields. The right side of the frame is dominated by two large, mature trees, rendered with delicate ink washes that suggest the texture of foliage and the play of light across the bark. The artist employs a restrained palette of grey and sepia tones, typical of the period's preference for monochromatic studies that prioritise form and atmospheric depth over colour.
The sky occupies a significant portion of the upper register, filled with light, wispy cloud formations that balance the weight of the trees below. Goll van Frankenstein, a merchant and collector who also practised as an amateur artist, often produced such works during his travels. His approach reflects a disciplined hand, focusing on the clarity of the horizon and the gentle undulations of the German countryside. The drawing serves as a record of a specific location, capturing the intersection of agricultural labour and the architectural character of the village. The use of wash allows for subtle transitions between the foreground shadows and the sunlit middle ground, creating a sense of distance that is both measured and calm. This piece offers a glimpse into the observational practices of the era, where the act of drawing functioned as a method for documenting the world with precision and restraint.
