A minimalist paper collage by Dutch artist Maria van Elk, featuring a sharp, geometric purple form on a textured background.
Maria van Elk, a Dutch artist active during the latter half of the twentieth century, produced works that engage with the physical properties of paper and the logic of geometric construction. This piece, titled Geometrische vouwvormen, demonstrates her interest in the relationship between flat surfaces and spatial manipulation. The composition consists of a singular, irregular polygon rendered in a deep, saturated purple hue, set against a lighter, textured paper background.
The work functions through the reduction of visual information. By stripping away representational elements, van Elk directs the viewer to the materiality of the paper and the precision of the cut edges. The purple form occupies the majority of the frame, creating a tension between the positive shape and the surrounding negative space. The texture of the paper remains visible, adding a tactile quality that contrasts with the sharp, calculated lines of the geometric form.
Van Elk often explored the process of folding and cutting as a means to investigate structural possibilities. In this instance, the form appears as a result of a deliberate, systematic approach to composition. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, relying instead on the clarity of its shape and the choice of colour to establish its presence. This approach aligns with the broader concerns of minimalist practice, where the object is presented without external reference or narrative. The work invites an examination of how simple geometric interventions can alter the perception of a two-dimensional plane. By focusing on the interaction between the purple shape and its support, the artist creates a quiet, analytical study of form and balance. The piece remains a clear example of her methodical approach to artistic production, where the act of making is as significant as the final visual result.
