A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting travellers resting at the Futagawa station along the historic Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the station of Futagawa, one of the stops along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. Hokusai produced this series during the early nineteenth century, capturing the daily life of travellers and the specific geography of the route. The composition focuses on a small group of figures resting near a wooden structure. One traveller sits on a crate, smoking a pipe, while another stands nearby. A horse, laden with baggage, waits patiently as a third figure attends to it. The background features simplified, undulating hills and horizontal bands of clouds, which are characteristic of the artist's approach to spatial arrangement in this series.
The print employs a restrained palette, relying on soft yellows, muted greens, and earthy tones to define the figures and the environment. Hokusai uses clear, controlled lines to delineate the forms of the travellers and the architecture, avoiding excessive detail in favour of a balanced, readable image. The inclusion of the horse and the specific attire of the figures provides a glimpse into the social history of the Edo period, where travel was a common, albeit arduous, necessity for many. The print is a fine example of the Ukiyo-e tradition, which sought to document the fleeting moments of urban and rural life. By focusing on a quiet, unremarkable moment at a roadside station, Hokusai invites the viewer to observe the rhythm of travel in historical Japan. The work is part of a larger project that documented the entire Tokaido route, a subject that remained popular among printmakers throughout the nineteenth century. This particular impression retains the subtle colour transitions typical of early woodblock printing techniques.
