A refined woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei, capturing a traditional dance performance with characteristic surimono elegance and detail.
This woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicts a performance of the Furuichi dance at the Hisagataya establishment. Gakutei was a prominent figure in the development of surimono, which were privately commissioned prints often distributed among members of poetry circles. These works are characterised by their high production quality, frequently incorporating metallic pigments and embossed paper techniques to achieve a luxurious finish.
The composition features two dancers in synchronised poses, their bodies angled to suggest movement across a wooden stage. They wear kimonos decorated with wheel motifs, which echo the circular lanterns suspended above. The background includes a stylised pine tree, a common element in Japanese iconography representing longevity and resilience. The dark, atmospheric space behind the dancers contrasts with the lighter foreground, creating a sense of theatrical depth. Calligraphic inscriptions are integrated into the upper portion of the print, typical of the surimono format where visual art and literature were closely linked.
Gakutei, who was also a poet, brought a refined sensibility to his designs. His work often reflects the tastes of the Edo-period literati, who valued subtle allusions and technical precision. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance decorative patterns with human form, maintaining a sense of poise and grace. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of muted tones that allows the graphic quality of the lines and the repetition of the wheel motifs to take precedence. This piece offers a glimpse into the cultural life of the period, capturing a specific performance within the refined context of a private commission.
