A woodblock print depicting the deity Fukurokuju beside a flowering peony tree, from the Hiroshige Gafu collection by Utagawa Hiroshige II.
This woodblock print originates from the Hiroshige Gafu, a collection of works by Utagawa Hiroshige II. The composition features Fukurokuju, one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology, identified by his elongated cranium and his association with longevity and wisdom. He is depicted in a moment of quiet contemplation, gazing towards a flowering peony tree. The artist employs a balanced arrangement, placing the figure on the left and the botanical subject on the right, a common technique in Edo-period book illustration to create visual harmony.
The line quality is precise and controlled, characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The artist uses a muted palette, relying on soft washes of colour to define the background and the robes of the deity. The peonies are rendered with simplified, elegant forms, avoiding excessive detail to maintain the clarity of the printed image. The inclusion of the deity alongside the flora reflects the cultural interest in auspicious symbols and the natural world during the mid-nineteenth century.
Utagawa Hiroshige II, a student of the master Utagawa Hiroshige, maintained the stylistic conventions of his predecessor while developing his own approach to narrative and figure drawing. This print demonstrates the technical proficiency required for multi-block printing, where each colour is applied via a separate carved woodblock. The paper retains the texture and subtle ageing of a historical document, providing an authentic aesthetic for those interested in Japanese print culture. The work functions as both a decorative piece and a record of the artistic output of the Utagawa school during a period of transition in Japanese art history.
