Beschreibung
A minimalist ink study of Fukurokuju, the Japanese god of longevity, by the Edo period master Ito Jakuchu.
This work depicts Fukurokuju, one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology, known as the deity of longevity and wisdom. Ito Jakuchu, a master of the mid-Edo period, employs a minimalist approach here, favouring economy of line over the dense detail found in his more famous polychrome bird-and-flower paintings. The figure is defined by a sweeping, elongated cranium, a hallmark of the deity, rendered with fluid, calligraphic brushwork that suggests both age and spiritual weight.
The composition is anchored by the presence of a pine branch, a traditional symbol of endurance and long life in East Asian iconography. Jakuchu balances the negative space of the silk background with the deliberate placement of the deity and the subtle, ink-wash depictions of cranes, which are also associated with longevity. The artist uses a restrained palette, relying on varying densities of sumi ink to create depth and texture. Small touches of yellow provide a singular point of contrast, drawing the eye to the lower portion of the frame.
Jakuchu was known for his eccentric style and his ability to shift between meticulous realism and expressive, simplified forms. This piece reflects his later period, where he often adopted a more spontaneous, calligraphic technique. The brushstrokes are confident and rhythmic, capturing the essence of the subject without unnecessary ornamentation. The work functions as a meditative study, inviting the viewer to observe the interplay between the ink and the silk support. It is a clear example of the artist's technical control, demonstrating how a few well-placed marks can convey complex mythological themes.
