This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the station of Fukoroi, one of the stops along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. Hokusai produced this series during the early nineteenth century, capturing the daily movement of travellers across the Japanese countryside. The composition features a group of pedestrians navigating a path, their forms rendered with clear, economical lines typical of the artist's approach to genre scenes.

The scene is structured around a large, gnarled tree on the left, which provides a vertical anchor for the composition.
